Mayor Coleman, Cupcake announce improved parking plan
Mayor urges City Council to reconsider appeal to pave way for business opening

SAINT PAUL – Today, Mayor Chris Coleman and Cupcake owner Kevin VenDeraa announced an improved parking plan for the restaurant planned at 949 Grand Avenue. The new parking plan includes 10 additional off-street parking spots for employees and customers.

“Cupcake has proven itself to be a successful and popular restaurant, desirable for any city, and I look forward to welcoming them to Saint Paul and Grand Avenue,” Mayor Chris Coleman said. “Local businesses are the backbone of Saint Paul’s economy, and it is essential that we provide them with opportunities for success in our city. This new parking plan adequately addresses the concerns raised in an appeal. I urge the City Council to reconsider yesterday’s vote to delay so Cupcake can open as soon as possible.”

Yesterday, the Saint Paul City Council voted to “lay over” Resolution No: 12-538 for four weeks. This resolution memorializes the 5-2 vote taken on February 15, 2012 granting the appeals of the Summit Hill Association and McClay Alton Real Estate, LLC. This resolution denies the necessary parking variance for the Cupcake restaurant in Saint Paul. Mayor Coleman planned to veto the resolution. The council can reconsider their vote to delay at their March 28 meeting.

“Thank you to Mayor Coleman for working on behalf of small businesses,” said Cupcake owner Kevin VanDeraa. “We are eager for this to be resolved so that we are able to open in Saint Paul early this summer.”

Working with staff from the Department of Planning and Economic Development and the Mayor’s Office, Kevin VanDeraa, owner of Cupcake, has unveiled an improved parking plan that provides off-street parking for 10 additional vehicles by leasing a portion of two underutilized area parking lots for employees and customers.
