The fire suppression division is responsible for fire and emergency response for the City of Saint Paul and contracted areas. Three shifts are supervised by deputy chiefs who oversee 136 uniformed fire suppression personnel. Each shift includes three district chiefs and 26 fire companies. 11 companies staff paramedic rigs for emergency medical response. Specialty units include:

The Saint Paul Fire Department contracts out for fire protection to 3M in Maplewood, the University of Minnesota Saint Paul campus, the State Fair grounds, the Veterans Administration Medical Center and surrounding areas.  ALS service is provided to Falcon Heights and Lauderdale.

There are two rescue squads that respond to all telephone alarms, each responsible for one half of the City. In the Firehouse 2002 national survey, the Fire Department's second District Chief was rated the 21st busiest chief in the country.
