1. What if I did not mail back my Census form?

Census workers will be in the field from May 1 through July 10 conducting interviews with residents of addresses from which a form was not received.

If no one answers at a particular residence, a census worker will visit the residence up to three times and attempt to reach the resident(s) by phone three times.

The census worker will leave a double-sided (English and Spanish) NOTICE of VISIT in the doorway that includes a phone number for the resident to call to schedule an appointment.

2. What is a Census Worker?

A census worker collects census information from residences that did not mail back their 2010 Census form. The census worker will visit all of these residences and record the answers for the resident(s).

If no one answers at a particular residence, a census worker will visit the residence up to three times, each time leaving a door hanger featuring a phone number for residents to call and arrange another visit.

The census worker will ONLY ask the questions that appear on the census form and will provide appropriate work identification.

Your privacy and confidentiality is our priority. The census worker who collects your information is sworn for life to protect your data under Federal Law Title 13. Those who violate the oath face criminal penalties: Under federal law, the penalty for unlawful disclosure is a fine of up to $250,000 or imprisonment for up to 5 years, or both.

3. How do I identify a Census Worker?

A census worker may need to visit your residence to ask you to complete the 2010 Census form in person.

All census workers will carry official federal government badges marked with their name. You also may ask them for a picture ID from another source to confirm their identity. In addition, some census workers might carry a 'U. S. Census Workers' bag.

If are still uncertain about the census worker's identity, please call the Regional Census Center for Minnesota at 816-994-2000 to confirm their identity.

4. Do I have to talk to the Census Worker?

Yes. Your participation in the 2010 Census is vital and required by law, (Section 221, of Title 13 of the U.S, Code).

However, rather than rely on criminal charges, the Census Bureau is very successful in getting participation by explaining the importance of the questions they ask and how the information benefits communities.
